Breathing Colours: What’s all this talk about Colours?!

Picture
Did you know that colour affects you and everyone around you?  It can affect how you feel, how you show up as well as what and how you do things.

Colours are everywhere; environment, nature, foods you eat and the clothes you wear to name a few.
Their function is important in our everyday lives;
  • Affects emotions and moods
  • Impacts the mind
  • Balances chakras
  • Influence physical body

Emotions & Mood

For a moment, I’d like to take you back in time to when you attended grade or high school.  Maybe you can think of a specific situation where this may have happened.  You’re in school, and the day just sucks!

It feels like everyone is picking on you, nothing is going right, the list goes on and on.  You may want to add hormones in there as well and possibly PMS to put the cherry on the top!

What do you do?  After school you go home and you put on your favourite sweater, top, pants, whatever it was, and you began to feel better.

Why?

Think back to the colour of that favourite piece of clothing. Do you remember the colour?  This is colour therapy at its basic form.

You wanted to feel better, feel comforted, colours helped you do that!

Mind

So, let me for a moment define the colours a bit more.  There is red, orange and yellow.  These are hot colours and help with motivation, personal power, courage and getting you moving.

Blue, indigo and violet (purple) are cool colours and are helpful for pain management, creating a sense of peacefulness and calm, relaxation, assisting with sleep.

Green is the middle colour between the hot and cold colours and is the balancing colour.  It is also for growth, expansion and personal transformation.

Getting back to mental clarity and focus, colours such as yellow are very helpful for focusing and for your brain. School age children or for anyone in any type of work requiring focus, adding yellow would be beneficial.

Different colours stimulate or calm the brain as I mentioned before, so when you begin to learn about colours, you can utilize the various colours to elicit different results depending on what you need.

Balancing Chakras

Now, for some of you, this paragraph may be a little whoowhoo for you and that’s ok.  If you read it and it resonates or makes you feel lighter, it may be something you want to take a closer look at.

If it makes you feel heavy or weird, then just skip it 😊

We are energy beings of light.  Everything around us has an energy as well.  Each colour has an energy and a vibration.  Within every one of us are energy centers or chakras.

When a chakra is out of balance, it can affect our physical body in the form or sickness or disease, as each of them are connected to the various body systems in our body.  Using colours to balance, clear and align the chakra can be very helpful in supporting the body’s ability to heal.

Influence Physical Body

As mentioned in balancing chakras, our body systems are affected by the energy centers and can affect our physical health and well-being.

For those who experience SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) it is due to not enough sun in the winter months.
Our body needs the sunshine (the sun has all the colours of the rainbow, showering down on us in the summertime).
However, the winter, the sun is farther away from the earth so our body can develop SAD where we feel depressed, no energy, etc.

By stepping out into the sunshine, having a colour light treatment or breathing in colours, your body recognizes the energy of the colour and can use it to gain energy and lessen the effects of SAD.

Colours are everywhere!  Once you begin to understand and work with them it is amazing how your life can transform!
Oh, just a fun FYI, if you have kids or grandkids (especially at this time of year!) and you are trying to get them to calm down or to sleep, make sure you haven’t dressed them in red or orange!

For sleeping, if the child is wearing HOT coloured PJs, or they may have bedsheets, a comforter, or a lot of toys, posters with these 2 colours in them, sleep will be difficult.

These are the colours for MOVING! So, don’t get frustrated at the kids!  Take a look at what colours are around them and then change accordingly.

Remember: for sleep or creating a sense of calm, green or blue are great colours.
